I love these pears! They are so juicy and sweet. They are also Huge! The two that I am holding in this pic are relatively small, with no exaggeration, I have seen some that are close to the size of my head. It is interesting to see them growing on the trees here, as the farmers have to tie a sack around them so that they don’t fall off the tree before they are ripe, as they are pretty hefty things.
In general, ripe Asian pears (also called Chinese pears and apple pears) are quite firm to the touch, crunchy to the bite (unlike the pears we’re used to in North America), lightly sweet and drippingly juicy. They have a lot of similarities to the apple family, such as their shape, crunchiness and that they are in their prime right when they are picked from the tree.
The other super cool things about Asian Pears is how healthy they are for you. Check out the nutritional info. on these. They pack a good 4-6 grams of fibre!
I will have to find some yummy recipes with Asian Pears. Any Ideas?
